The authors examine the effects of consumption subsidies, public enterprise pricing, and price controls on the real exchange rate. Under plausible assumptions, they show that permanent reform in these areas leads to a permanent real exchange rate appreciation. An empirical application to the 1990 Fujimori Plan in Peru is discussed. Copyright 1993 by The London School of Economics and Political Science
