The neo-classical one-sector growth model has become a standard piece of equipment in the economic theorist's tool kit. Nevertheless, most of the available expositions of it are needlessly complicated and mathematical, and tend to obscure the simplicity of the central analytical propositions. This article presents a geometrical exposition of the model for the simplest possible case.2 It then goes on to indicate how various relaxations of the assumptions of this case can be accommodated, how the model can be used to illustrate various theories of the nature of the problem of economic development, and how it can be extended to take account of certain problems of growth in a monetary economy
