Textual Exegesis as a Scientific Problem

The problem of inference which is posed by such an example is more interesting than the example itself. If a substantive economic relationship were under discussion-say the proposition that the per capita demand for corn has zero elasticity we would never dream of establishing its validity by citing one or two or three (observations on pairs of years, say)-let alone by citing two facts against it and one fact for it, as Barkai does. We would all agree that larger, more objectively chosen bodies of evidence be brought to bear unon the problem
