TEIE present Surveyl is the first of a series of studies of the current economic conditions which will be undertaken by the Secretariat of the Economic Commission for Europe. It is the work of the Research and Planning Division of the Secretariat under the direction of Mr. Nicholas Kaldor, who was principally assisted by Messrs. Hal B. Lary and H. Staehle. It must be said without more ado that Mr. Kaldor and his associates have produced a report of which any economist would be proud to claim authorship. It sets a new standard of comparison. It is a mine of relevant information. Its analysis-as one would expect-is careful and illuminating. It is a joy to read. Both the professional economist and others will find it fully satisfying
