This paper describes the nature of research activity in the College of Education at the University of Minnesota, a college that has ranked high on several studies of research productivity (Higgins, 1968; Walberg, 1971). But the reasons for examining the research activity are much broader. This information was needed by the Office of Educational Research, Planning and Development to provide a basis for college research planning, to help stimulate further research among faculty members, and to provide accountability evidence to funding agencies, central administration, and state legislators of the success of the college in meeting this aspect of its mission. The specific questions of the study were four: Who is doing what kind of research? What proportion of total effort is devoted to research? What is the cost and who supports educational research? Finally, what are the identifiable outcomes of the research effort? To pursue these four questions, a set of items was developed as part of a larger faculty activities survey conducted during the 1970-71 academic year. 1 All faculty members (N= 206) were asked to complete a questionnaire, and a 93% response rate was achieved
