With these two volumes Brian Kemp completes the edition of the sequence of Salisbury episcopal acta in the period before episcopal registers for the diocese start to survive, which he began with EEA 18–19. In all, there is evidence for nearly 900 Salisbury episcopal acta over the period 1078–1297; the diocese was populous and contained a large number of monastic houses—several of them (e.g. Malmesbury, Abingdon, Reading) of great wealth. The two volumes contain 450 acta for the 1229–97 period, a thirteenth-century Salisbury episcopal formulary with 31 items (App. I), a list of references to 35 letters dimissory issued to candidates seeking ordination from other bishops (App. II), and addenda et corrigenda to volumes 18–19 (App. VII), including six new items. Nine bishops held the see between 1229 and 1297; only two of these lasted more than ten years in office. Even so, the impression given by this collection is
