The topic of this edited volume is regionalism in Europe in connection with nationalism and identity construction from the late nineteenth century until today. Diverse European countries, both democratic and totalitarian, under different political regimes are analysed. In their introduction, editors Xosé M. Núñez Seixas and Eric Storm describe the historiographical debates about territorial identities, nationalism and ethnicity since the 1970s, and they emphasise the highly ambiguous role that regionalism has played in European history. They ask: ‘To what extent is it possible to analytically differentiate regionalism from nationalism?’ and note that ‘regionalism has been given little attention in the “classic” nationalism studies’ (p. 4). Furthermore, they explain that there is a lack of cross-European or multiple-case comparative studies. Most historians analyse just one region, and comparisons between Eastern and Western Europe, or between Southern and Northern Europe are still rare in the field of nationalism studies.
