This collection of essays, edited by Kevin Linch and Matthew McCormack, is based largely on papers presented at a conference at Leeds University in 2011. As always, bringing together such a volume presents challenges, but the editors should be commended for overseeing a clear and coherent organisational framework. The book focuses on eighteenth-century British soldiers across the period from 1715 to 1815. It brings together both established and newly-emerging scholars, with essays on diverse representations, experiences and practices of soldiering, both domestically and abroad. The methodologies are drawn from both social and cultural history, with an array of sources ranging from courts-martial records and regimental orderly books to literature and military painting. The volume comprises ten chapters that are organised and linked back and forth around five key themes: ‘Britishness’ and national and transnational identities (chapters by Stephen Conway and Graciela Iglesias Rogers); military hierarchies and professions (Bruce Collins and Mathew McCormack); military justice and discipline (William P. Tatum III and Ilya Berkovich); soldiering and gender (Cicely Robinson and Louise Carter); and the soldier’s place within society (Caroline Louise Nielsen and Kevin Linch)
