One of the most important developments for students of eighteenth-century Britain, Europe and the United States is the Georgian Papers Programme whereby the papers of George III in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle are made accessible online. Their availability will not only enhance our understanding of the king’s domestic role but will also illuminate his extensive connections with the Hanoverian members of his family and with contemporary European rulers. The collaboration of the Royal Archives with the Library of Congress in a projected major exhibition, on the inter-connected worlds of George III and George Washington, promises to provide further understanding of the former’s role in the most controversial aspect of his reign, the successful rebellion of the thirteen British North American colonies, which Jeremy Black in this slender but highly informative book suitably characterises with the chapter title ‘American Debacle’. Black is the author of a major biography of
