This book by Caitriona Clear is the first detailed study of the contribution made by readers to two Irish women’s magazines, Woman’s Life in the 1950s and Woman’s Way in the 1960s. It is not, as its author notes, a comprehensive history of Irish women’s magazines in those decades, but the work offers an insightful and engaging analysis of women’s involvement with these magazines in a period, particularly the 1960s, of substantial social and economic change. Consisting of seven chapters, the work also has three appendices, one looking at social, political and economic developments in Ireland between 1951 and 1969. The second appendix explores other women’s magazines in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s, and the final one explores ‘Women, Paid Work and Marital Status in Ireland 1946–71’. It is a little odd not to have included the range of information given in these appendices in the related book chapters
