This large database contains a collection of digitised documents from the National Library of Scotland dealing with British rule in India from the 1750s to the 1940s, comprising the papers of British administrators, soldiers, businessmen, missionaries and travellers, plus a small number of Indian manuscripts, and some sketches and paintings. The documents cover a wide range of subjects, including the government and administration of the East India Company and of the colonial government after 1859; agriculture, especially tea and coffee plantations, trade and business across the period; travel, exploration, leisure and field sports; colonial warfare, including material on the Indian Uprising of 1857–9; and missionary activity. The Indian manuscripts are composed of paintings and histories, poems, astrological calendars and charts and literary works in Sanskrit and Persian. A very substantial amount of primary source material has thus been made available for teachers, students and researchers. This is supplemented by an introductory essay by Crispin Bates, Kim Wagner, and Andrea Major, all members of the School of History and the Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, which provides a concise overview of the history of British rule in India, and links the documentary collection to key themes
