These two most recent additions to the impressive Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture span a large geographical area across western England and the Welsh border, leaving only a strip in the centre of the country and Cornwall still to come in the programme of high quality and expert cataloguing and contextualising that characterises the Corpus project. The overall structure echoes past volumes, with short introductory chapters covering existing research and literature, historical context, geology and regional distribution patterns, followed by a detailed catalogue and extensive photographic illustrations. Catalogue entries themselves follow the existing CASSS format, which has become the ‘industry standard’ for carved monument recording in Britain. No two CASSS volumes are ever exactly the same, however, as they take on individual personalities reflecting not only the material in each region, but also the expertise and interests of the individual authors and their contributors.
