Just before Helmut Schmidt (b. 1918) died in November 2015, he could look back on thirty years of formal political service, which had culminated in his chancellorship (1974–82), and thirty years of informal influence as a retired Chancellor—a public role which he eventually formalised by becoming chief editor of the eminent weekly Die Zeit (1983–2015). The German press commented on the stark contrast between his progressively declining authority as German Chancellor, sandwiched between Willy Brandt and Helmut Kohl, which ended in 1982 in a vote of no confidence against him and the Social Democratic Party, and his rising authority as an elder statesman. Most biographies concentrate on Schmidt’s legacy for Germany; on what to make of his early commitment to the Hitler Youth and the eight years of service in the Wehrmacht for his realist outlook on world politics; on how to think about way Schmidt addressed the global economic crisis and the terrorist threats in the 1970s today; and on what his growing authority in the twenty-first century reveals about the structure of political influence
