Memoirs of the Court of George III. Vol. I

Since the 1990s there has been a substantial revival of academic interest in the dynastic politics, cultural patronage and ecclesiastical influence of European monarchy. It is a development reflected in the foundation of the Society for Court Studies in 1995 and the launch in the following year of The Court Historian, which published its twentieth volume in 2015. In the British context, scholars such as Robert Bucholz, Frances Harris and Hannah Smith have elucidated the workings of the court and the role of the courtiers of Queen Anne and the first two Georges, while Edward Corp has devoted a distinguished career to in-depth analyses of the Jacobite courts in exile between 1689 and 1760. Their work, together with that of others, has enabled historians to understand the early eighteenth-century British monarchy in its proper European setting, and the process has been taken further in excellent biographies of George II by Jeremy Black and by Andrew C. Thompson. Now Pickering & Chatto, continuing their production of high-quality editions of primary sources, offer us four important documents from the British court of the later Georgian period, all of them written by female associates of the court of George III
