For most of the twentieth century, modern Central European history was seen as a battleground between nationalism and empire, specifically in the Habsburg Empire (also known as the Habsburg Monarchy). Most historians saw the Habsburg Monarchy’s succession by nation-states after 1918 as a natural, modern development. In recent decades, however, historians have begun to emphasise uts staying power, its overall benefit to the region’s population, and the fact that few nationalist critics sought its dissolution—until 1918. It is this revisionist stream to which Pieter M. Judson now wants to give full recognition and direction. By constructing a fresh narrative, he introduces new research by revisionist scholars, and makes a most cogent case for the viability of the Monarchy/Empire. It should be recommended reading for all students of that Monarchy. It is unclear whether Judson’s new narrative does much more than reaffirm the existing narrative of the last three decades, as it relates to the Monarchy’s high politics. That said, it provides much new context for the established narrative as well
