It is quite some time since the Société des études robespierristes sponsored a publication having much to do with Robespierre. Saddled with this title by the partisan fervour of Albert Mathiez, the leading body of French historians of the Revolution retains too much ancestral piety to broaden its name. But the range of its publications, now called simply Collection des études révolutionnaires, extends far beyond not only Robespierre and his disciples, but even the Revolution itself. Most contributions to this volume, the proceedings of a one-day conference held in Rouen in June 2003, fall outside the Revolutionary period strictly defined, and mentions of it are relatively fleeting, even when they do occur. The theme is Franco-British relations between Louis XIV and Napoleon, as seen through the prism of treaties.
