This closely researched study of a sixteenth-century French noble dynasty, the House of Averton, is also an ambitious attempt to rethink, and often criticise, current approaches to the French nobility. It ranges widely through the subject, citing most of the major works—including English-language studies that are often neglected by French scholars. However, it is not for the faint of heart. Lengthy, intensely detailed, and closely argued, it will be useful mainly to specialists. The author advocates an anthropological approach to historical genealogy. Instead of viewing dynasties as biologically determined by male primogeniture, he wants us to look at how each generation works to enhance and perpetuate the family name through marriage succession and cultural display, and how this cumulative identity was affected by changing social conditions. The Avertons were a noble family with influence in the province of Maine. François I d’Averton, Count of Belin, fought for the Catholic League
