This volume containing ten papers in German, French, English and Italian represents the fruits of a conference held in May 2006 to celebrate the founding of the Centre for the Comparative History of Religious Orders at the Catholic University of Eichstätt. Following nine detailed papers divided into the general themes of Spirituality, Reform, Structures and Networks, a conclusion by Giles Constable draws the threads together. The thematic organisation and the wide briefs taken on by the authors inevitably make for some cross-referencing and overlapping between the different papers. The emphasis throughout—unsurprising, given that the purpose of the volume is to provide a kind of manifesto for the work of the new Centre—is on comparative methodologies for the study of medieval monastic orders. Thus, although all of the papers call upon empirical examples from specific foundations, only one, Brian Golding's ‘Authority and Discipline at the Paraclete, Fontevraud and Sempringham’, uses the
