According to Eduardo de Mesa Gallego, the military history of early modern—or rather Habsburg—Spain has been transformed in recent years in Spain itself. Various developments have contributed to this achievement, including the existence of benign publishers. The latter include the Spanish Ministry of Defence, which has been publishing modern editions of early modern treatises on armies and war, as well as monographs on related topics. The volume under review is an edition of the 4th marqués de Aytona's (1615–70) Discurso militar, first published in Valencia in 1653, and reprinted in 1654 both there and in Spanish Milan. Aytona had learned his military trade in Flanders in the early 1630s, and subsequently served in Catalonia. A grandee, he was briefly Governor and Captain General of Galicia (1645–7) and—even more briefly—viceroy of Catalonia (1647).
