It would be mischievous (and moreover misleading) to suggest that one of Tony Blair's unacknowledged achievements was to rehabilitate Harold Wilson as a leader of moral authority and political integrity. Superficially, it might be claimed that Wilson tenaciously pursued a diplomatic solution to the Vietnam War while fending off American political pressure for a British military commitment, at a time of acute economic dependence on Washington; Blair, on the other hand, yielded to Washington's pressure to participate in the American-led war in Iraq. Neither element of this analysis carries much weight. Few have judged Wilson's attempts to play a brokering role in Vietnam as a credible venture, and Blair was neither pulled nor pushed into Iraq by the Americans, but dragged his party and his government with him. In fact, both Lyndon Johnson and George Bush displayed an understanding of the domestic contexts and pressures under which the two Labour Prime Ministers were working
