The ways in which human bodies, body parts, organs, and tissue are commodities in a biomedical world has been the focus of extensive historical research following organ-donation scandals in the National Health Service in Britain. The passing of the Human Tissue Act (c. 30, 2004) finally repealed the Anatomy Act (1832). The latter made the poorest repay their welfare debt to society on the dissection table in death, and so expand medical education. The Human Tissue bill thus heralded a new era of consensual medical ethics. This volume, edited by Sarah Ferber and Sally Wilde, approaches that complex history by exploring the way in which the body was divided, its educational uses, and museum display. Taking a multidisciplinary focus, and concentrating on former colonial areas of the world that facilitate a subaltern history of the body, the collection of essays seeks to illuminate how a history of the disintegration and division of the body can inform modern bioethics
