School histories are not easy books to produce. Some are triggered by centenaries, causing someone to write who is unused to historical methods and sources. Many contrive to depict a little world beyond which nothing else exists, because that it is what governors, former pupils and parents expect. Fortunately, none of these limitations applies to Howard Tomlinson’s history of Hereford Cathedral School. He is not only its former headmaster but a trained historian and published author, who has researched deeply into the sources while seeking to understand the wider context in which the school’s history belongs, and he constantly relates one to the other. Within the school, he pays due and regular attention to institutional matters, teachers, the curriculum, pupils and school life. The book is meticulously footnoted and includes twenty-eight illustrations in colour with a great many more in black and white, so that the reader is able to visualise much about the school’s buildings, personalities and activities
