In the introduction to his collection of primary documents related to the foundations and fundraising underpinning the building of the East London Mosque (ELM) from 1910 onwards, Humayun Ansari asserts that ‘through this story of mosque building, we can trace not just a history of immigration but also its connections with empire, trade, and war, and the contours of the process through which the ‘Muslim’ community in London’s East End became established’ (p. 2). Using a different methodological lens, but similarly committed to contextualising the creation of a particular church building and (Christian) community outside an exclusively ecclesiastical, parochial frame, Richard Olney also provides, in part, a history of migration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—in this case the movement of clerks, civil servants, salesmen and school teachers (mostly from the home counties, but also inner-city London) to newly created suburban estates where they could raise their young families in environs that placed a premium on privacy, respectability and lower-middle-class mores
