T HE relationship between the educator-president Domingo F. Sarmiento of Argentina and Horace Mann, sometimes called the father of public schools in the United States, is one of the earliest and best-known examples of inter-American educational co-operation. Sarmiento's experiences in the United States during 1847-48, talking with Mann, visiting schools, studying reports and other publications on education in the United States, made a tremendous impression on this Argentine educator.
