T HE purpose of this discussion is to trace a rough parallel 1 in the development of medical and legal scholarship, which can be crudely anticipated by letting each of the inches of two imaginary yardsticks, one for law and one for medicine, represent five of the one hundred and eighty years just passed, and by laying these sticks down side by side and sliding the one representing law backward about six inches. The lag of some three decades thus indicated is to be observed at a number of points,2 and the uniformity of the lag is somewhat striking
