IN THE state of affairs existing in the Far East as these words are written (February 27, 1941), there would seem to be no possibility whatever of a negotiated adjustment in American-Japanese relations. Nor does as much of the future as can be brought into the focus of probability at this moment offer very great hope of such. There is no need to rehearse here the alarming reports of an impending Japanese thrust into Malaysia that have filled newspapers and air waves during the past two weeks. England, Australia, New Zealand, the Dutch East Indies, and even the Vichy government of France have tightened their lines of defense to the last notch
