T IS well to state at the beginning of any discussion of health conservation or lengthening of the life span (subjects which are as closely allied as the two sides of a shield) that increase in expectation of life at birth is not a true measure of progress in life extension. To illustrate this statement it is only necessary to note that comparison of gains for all ages in the last fifty years shows an increase of twenty years at birth which decreases at successive age intervals to three years' gain at fifty years
