The role of stimulus preference and various subject and task variables in the solution of matrix-completion problems were examined using children at 4 and 6 years of age. Contrary to expectation, degree of preference for a given stimulus category did not generally predict performance on matrices which included that category. However, preference was related to overall matrix performance at each age level. In addition, age, the number of stimulus categories (two versus three) incorporated into the matrices, the type of drawing (realistic versus geometric) employed in the matrices, and the specific matrix stimulus categories (color, form, number, size) taken individually and in combination, were found to have significant effects upon performance
