Le juste marché: Le système annonaire romain au XVIe et XVIIe siècles, by Monica Martinat (Rome: Ecole Française de Rome, 2004; pp. 367. N.p.). The book deals with an administrative system used in the papal state from the mid-sixteenth century until the end of the ancien régime, in order to regulate and control the functioning of the Roman grain market, and of bread production in Rome. It is notable that this strict degree of control was introduced to the markets of the papal state during a quite late period of its history, when close state supervision of such markets was about to be questioned by European theorists—not that Adam Smith was likely to have attracted many eager readers in contemporary Rome.
