The editors of this excellent collection of essays have, independently of one another, already acquired reputations for writing and editing books that are both intellectually stimulating and well suited for the undergraduate audience. Together, they have done it again. Defining social history more broadly than has been the case in the past, the essays in this book take in much of the ground claimed by a ‘cultural history’ that once seemed set to sweep social history in its path. So why edit a book on social history that includes religion, identities, literacy, travel, and magic, rather than a book on cultural history that includes agriculture, towns, social structure, and consumption? Without directly addressing this question, the essays here often seem to suggest that while social historians need to be more cultural—thinking about identities, ideas, political culture and belief—there is a greater need for cultural historians to be more social—grounding their work better in locality, economic condition and social experience
