Westminster Abbey Reformed, 1540–1640, ed. C.S. Knighton and Richard Mortimer (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2003; pp. xvi + 293. £59.95). Despite the extraordinary riches of its muniments, a scholarly official history of Westminster Abbey in the post-Reformation era remains to be written. In anticipation of the possible commissioning of a new book to commemorate the millennium of the Abbey's foundation by Edward the Confessor in 1065, the editors of the present volume modestly describe it as an interim work, designed not to replace the one assembled under the title, A House of Kings, by E.F. Carpenter, to mark its 900th anniversary in 1965, but rather to supplement it with the fruits of some recent research on this ecclesiastical institution and its personnel in the critical century between the Reformation and the Civil War. The collection does not offer a consecutive or chronological account of the period in question; nor does it
