Ottonische Königsherrschaft: Organisation und Legitimation königlicher Macht, by Hagen Keller (Darmstadt: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, 2002; pp. 319. Eur 34.90). This volume is a collection of seven essays originally published over the period 1982–97, four of them in the periodical Frühmittelalterliche Studien, edited from the University of Münster, where Keller (now Professor Emeritus) taught for many years. In a brief foreword Gerd Althoff introduces the volume and comments on Keller's role in the re-evaluation of Ottonian rule which has been taking place over the last twenty or more years. Keller, trained in the Freiburg school with its prosopographical approach to historical study, has developed an interest in the cultural aspects of Ottonian and Salian political history, though his prosopographical background emerges in his comments on the personal nature of the relations between Ottonian rulers and their magnates, and on the circumstances of Otto I's first coronation.
