This outstanding and important book makes a much needed contribution to the knowledge and understanding in the English-speaking world of the main currents of Polish historical scholarship between the late eighteenth century and the Second World War; indeed, it goes beyond 1945 in the case of those historians who had reached their professional maturity in the inter-war period and who continued their scholarly work after the war. The book consists of twenty-four fully annotated biographical essays, written by nineteen scholars, of whom ten work, or have worked, in North America, and nine are from Poland. The collection is strictly chronological in order of year of birth, starting with Adam Naruszewicz, born in 1733, and ending with Adam Próchnik, born in 1892. One result of this approach, as opposed to a thematic one, is a degree of repetition, especially with reference to the impact of Romanticism and Positivism on Polish historiography
