We already have several excellent studies of the ‘Great Game’—the competition between the British-Indian and Tsarist Empires for the control of Asia (particularly Central Asia), which was resumed, in a slightly different guise, after the Bolshevik Revolution. Fresh historical work on the subject has, however, gained renewed relevance following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent conflicts in (and over) this resource-rich region. Starting with a reconsideration of the interplay between strategic issues past and present, Peter John Brobst's The Future of the Great Game examines the problem of planning the defence of India, and of India's ‘near abroad’, during the 1940s. He addresses these issues mainly through the geopolitical work of the Indian administrator and Orientalist Sir Olaf Kirkpatrick Caroe (1892–1981), the Indian government's wartime Foreign Secretary.
