The decline of the Sonderweg school's interpretation of the Kaiserreich as a peculiarly backward state, the course of development of which deviated substantially from a normative ‘Western’ path, has paved the way for important reinterpretations of Imperial Germany and its ambivalent ‘modernity’. One field of research that has received increasing attention in recent years is the German ‘media revolution’ of the late nineteenth century which led to the emergence of one of the world's most dynamic press markets. As early as 1893, the future Reich Chancellor, Bernhard von Bülow, observed that Germany was witnessing a ‘period of boundless publicity’, an age in which no institution, not even the monarchy, could fail to acknowledge the growing influence of the press.
