This is a remarkable book, the result of forty years of dedicated research, with its origins in a doctoral dissertation topic suggested by Robin Oggins's academic supervisor at the University of Chicago. The main themes of the book are the sports of falconry and hawking which, in methods of practice and status of practitioners, differed in a number of important respects; the professionals (the hitherto unacknowledged stars of the royal mews) who cared for, trained, carried, and very often flew the royal falcons and hawks; and the English kings, who over 250 years expended so much of their time and income on these magnificent hunting birds. Kings feature prominently in this study, as the main sources of evidence are royal records, and because the personal tastes in sport of individual kings involved vast expenditure.
