It is a sign of the extraordinary popularity of the arts and crafts movement that William Morris's dictum ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’ can now be found printed on polystyrene imitation mile-posts in branches of a chain of kitchen-fitters all across West Yorkshire. Morris's views on these artificial signs are all too easy to predict, but what would he have made of this book? Without a doubt, it is beautiful. Once again, Phaidon have produced a volume which is well printed, well designed, and lavishly illustrated. With very few exceptions, the 249 images used are colourful, sharp, and illuminating. Moreover, Rosalind Blakesley writes clearly and often amusingly about her subject. But, given the sheer range of publications on this topic, one might wonder whether another one is really necessary—particularly given the sell-out success of the International Arts and Crafts exhibition (with accompanying catalogue) at the Victoria and Albert Museum only a year ago. In the end, we might ask, is this book really useful enough to justify its price
