Starting about twenty-five years ago, the large cohort of historians who streamed into German academic life in the 1960s and early 1970s reached the point in their careers at which they felt justified in writing works of synthesis. Favourably complementing the increasing supply of such works was a growing demand for them on the part of Germany's educated public. As a result, commercial publishers began to solicit and to market general histories in an aggressive fashion, creating conditions quite different from those in which central European scholarly monographs—limited-edition products of subsidy publishers—conventionally appeared. The pioneer of this trend was Thomas Nipperdey's three-volume history of Germany in the long nineteenth century, rapidly followed by Hans-Ulrich Wehler's multi-volume history of modern German society, and then by works of Wolfgang Mommsen, Klaus Hildebrand, Michael Stürmer and many others. The most recent product of this development, the two-volume history written by one of the younger members of the cohort, Heinrich August Winkler, who has just retired as professor of history from the Humboldt University in Berlin, was published in 2000. Oxford University Press has now made the first volume available in an English translation
