Palestinian history had existed in an uninterrupted fashion long before the arrival of European Jewish colonists in the late nineteenth century. Sadly, that history barely features in general works on modern Palestine. Non-specialised European narratives typically begin with a biblical account of Jewish existence in Palestine, chart the Roman expulsion of Jews, briefly allude to the Crusades, discuss the course of Zionist colonisation and then culminate with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Palestine and its people are absented from the record and the crucial Ottoman period is largely ignored. Fortunately, a more inclusive and serious literature is beginning to emerge, exemplified by such works as A History of Modern Palestine (2004) by Ilan Pappé. Gudrun Krämer, of the Free University Berlin, contributes to this literature, tracing the history of Palestine and its inhabitants from the Ottoman conquest to 1948. Her work first appeared in German in 2002, while the English version is now available in a very readable translation
