sustantivo invencion ha estado de moda en las ciencias sociales estas ultimas decadas. Llego asimismo a la historia y a los estudios internacionales. Tiene que ver con la perspectiva constructivista, que sostiene que todo lo que damos por producto natural ha sido construido como respuesta a desafios de magnitud que encuentra el hombre a lo largo de la historia. No solo las ideas y las percepciones habrian sido inventadas, sino que aquellas instituciones generalmente mas apreciadas por la civilizacion, como la familia; o pasiones como el amor. Todo se inventa. No hay problema con esta aproximacion, siempre que no se pierda del todo el caracter figurativo de esas denominaciones, ya que en este contexto invencion no es mero artificio, objeto pre-fabricado, institucion o cultura que puede ser desechada por cualquier otra que se pueda construir. No es el sentido que le da Sir Michael Howard, eminente cultor de la historia militar y de asuntos estrategicos en general. Para entender el titulo de su libro se deben tener presentes dos deformaciones que se dan en las percepciones colectivas acerca de lo que es y lo que es como realidades naturales. Por una parte, tenemos el dudoso adagio -si se le sigue de manera incondicionalsi quieres la paz, preparate para la guerra. Tras este seductor y muy practico consejo, se esconde la tentacion de considerar a la guerra o el conflicto como una institucion eterna
