One facet of legal unification in Germany has been the transformation of the GDR state notariat into an independent profession. Over two thirds of the state notaries were women and the majority of these now continue to work as independent professionals. In contrast, in the old FRG the notarial profession has always been a stronghold of male domination but split into two competing professional groups. As one of these has taken a lead (at the expense of the other) in the transformation process in the East which made it possible for the largely female notariat to survive, four questions are being asked: (1) what was the situation of lawyers generally and notaries in particular in the GDR? (2) what precisely has been the nature of this process in the context of the debate about gender and professionalisation? (3) what has been the impact of this process on the East German notariat? (4) what prospects are there of East German women notaries taking ownership of their professional project in the future
