Taking Schmitt's famous dictum that "all significant concepts of the theory of the modern state are secularized theological concepts" as its starting point, this article serves as a critique of Schmitt's concept of secularization via a reflection on paternity as the master metaphor of legitimate power. The author shows how modern political theory has used the figure of the father to complicate and ultimately undermine the analogy of God and sovereign that Schmitt and many of his readers take to be self-evident. From Hobbes's redefinition of fatherhood in Leviathan to Kant's forceful rejection of the paternal ruler, shifting concepts of paternity prepare the way for the modern political utopia of a "fatherless society." In this respect, Freud's insistence on the father as "the earliest authority" known to individuals and societies alike emerges as the greatest challenge to Schmitt's account of the history of political modernity
