This article examines “The Present Social Situation of the French Writer” in order to offer a speculative reconstruction of its theory of “political style.” While the 1934 essay is often treated as a montage of passages from previous texts on French modernist literature, the present article argues that its unusual form allows Benjamin to transcend familiar oppositions of form and content. Instead, it relates political tendency to literary form through an unspoken notion of “political style,” one that locates the politics of literature in the invention and distribution of new techniques
