[Author's Summary.-The Negro has written verse since colonial times. In North America his most characteristic expression is the spiritual and religious verse based on the Bible. But in Latin America his religious verse is based on African cults, and there is nothing comparable to the North American Negro spirituals. The Latin American Negro's love of rhythm finds expression in song and dance, and these rhythms have been used by the new poets, notably Nicolas Guillen.]
