T HE AATSP HAS encouraged the teaching of foreign language at all levels from its very beginning. One of the first editors for Spanish in the Grades was Stephen L. Pitcher. In more recent years, through the efforts of Donald D. Walsh, the AATSP has had a department devoted entirely to Spanish FLES. Its present editor is Professor Leonor A. Larew. Its previous editors have been Professor Agnes M. Brady and Harley D. Oberhelman. According to Sturgis E. Leavitt (The Teaching of Spanish in the United States, Hispania, XLIV [Dec. 19611, 591-625) the earliest provision for Spanish seems to have been at the Public Academy of the City of Philadelphia (later, the University of Pennsylvania) in 1749.
