Fundamental interpretation of La Celestina seems to be based on one of two assumptions: that an irrepressible fate absolves the characters of final responsibility for their actions, that the work is extremely pessimistic and rather amoral; or that Rojase sees a moral purpose and is looking for some meaning to life which will be of value to his reader.* There are certain procedures which Rojas uses that are difficult to explain on the basis of fate or upon the assumption of the existence of the classical tragic hero, noble but with a flaw. Our purpose is to show that these procedures can best be understood by postulating for Rojas an understanding of man's ambivalent nature
