small Iberian nation feared encroachment on, or even a possible absorption of, their country by their bigger neighbor. This fear made them exaggerate whatever differences there are between the two nations and minimize whatever they have in common. But in our day there is no longer any reason for such fear. And Brazilians have no reason whatsoever for such an attitude, since neither Spain nor any of their neighboring Spanish American republics could possibly dream of absorbing Brazil, that young giant which for centuries has had its own distinctive, well-defined personality. I think that altogether this attitude in both Portuguese and Brazilians is more the result of a subconscious habit of feeling than of objective reasoning. Besides, here in the United States, we ought to face reality as far as the teaching of Portuguese is concerned
