Literature, properly understood is the attempt of an author to communicate to his or her own generation and to later ones what the universal experiences of human life have meant to one human being who, at the same time, is a living part of a larger national culture and way of life. In the best writing this is accomplished by a successful fusion of aesthetic elements, lyrical freedom and social and ethical sensibility, with the whole being expressed in an unmistakable personal style, and often, in form of an implicit or explicit protest against the status quo or parts of it (537)
