Concerning the staff in the college level, the average number of teachers per college teaching Spanish was 4, ranging from 1 to 15. An average of 3 taught first and second year courses. Only one college indicated it used graduate assistants. As per ranks, there were an average of 2 with rank of instructor, 1 for assistant professor, 2 for associate professor, and one for full professor. Degrees held by the teaching staff also varied, but an average of 3 teachers had Ph.D. or Master's degree, and only an average of 2 ha B.S. or B.A. Th re was an average of 2 native teachers in each of the schools responding. Six schools indicated they had a supervisor of elementary courses; 16 said they did not. The college Spanish staff visited elementary, and high school programs more occasionally (16 schools) than frequently (5). Five schools did not carry on visitations. All in all this survey represents a good sampling of the colleges in Illinois. A more accurate analysis is possible only when more schools respond. Perhaps this will be possible in the future
