Set in the eighteenth-century viceroyalty of New Granada, Garcia Marquez's Del amory otros demonios (1994) is the story of a love affair between a young girl suspected of demonic possession and the thirty-six- year-old priest charged with investigating the case. Beyond the surface flow of events, the novel possesses a sustained symbolic dimension enriched by an ample variety of intertexts. The symbolism serves to illuminate diverse modes of being, cultural patterns, and conflicts present in colonial Spanish America
